Why Volunteer?

I’m so glad I found this place, called Stepping Stones of Hope.
Where children suffering tragic loss, can begin to learn to cope.
Their losses are overwhelming, and their hearts are torn in two.
Alone and trapped inside themselves, they don’t know what to do.
We, as volunteers, don’t claim to be wholesome, sane or well,
but we’re here for all the kids who come, each with a story to tell.
Though we first start out as strangers, we grow to love them so.
They are no longer here alone, together we will go.
The healing comes from deep within, but couldn’t start without,
the help that volunteers provide, to get those feelings out.
A child’s tears can pierce your heart, like a swiftly speeding arrow.
But a child’s hugs make spirits soar, as if there’s no tomorrow.
Emotions the whole gamut run, laughter flows as well as tears.
Unleashing strength they never knew, to get them through their fears.
So we take time out from busy lives, it’s the least that we could do.
You may appreciate my gift of time, but I treasure the gift I got from you.

Read “Why Volunteer?” A poem written by a wonderful couple who have been volunteering their time to Stepping Stones of Hope since 2008. All volunteers are required to attend an orientation session and complete a mandatory background check. Volunteers are specially trained for their volunteer role and are provided with multiple in-service opportunities each year.
